Cow Tidbits

Cow Tidbits:

Here is a bit of information I've collected from various places on the net - all cow related of course :-)

Each spot on a Holstein is unique :
just like snowflakes - no two are alike

A cow gives nearly 200,000 glasses of milk
    in her lifetime

The average cow weighs approximately 1400 pounds

Other animals besides cows that are milked:
Water buffalo, camels, goats, sheep, horses
    and reindeer

Cows have four stomachs - the rumen, reticulum,
    omasum, and abomasum

Cow's milk is made into many different dairy foods,
such as : cheese, yogurt, cream cheese, sour cream,
    ice cream, and butter

The large black and white Holstein is the most common
breed of cow.  There are also Guernsey's, Jerseys,
Brown Swiss, Ayrshires, and Milking Shorthorns
to name a few

Cows regurgitate their food and rechew the cud to help
digestion.  A cow spends up to 8 hours a day
eating

There are 207 bones in a cow's body

A cow can spend up to 13 hours a day lying down

Dairy cows can produce 125 pounds of saliva
a day

A newborn Holstein calf weighs about 100 pounds
and can walk within 1 hour after being born
